END-STAGE RENAL DISEASE (ESRD)
What is End-Stage Renal Disease?
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is the most advanced stage of chronic kidney disease, where the kidneys have lost nearly all ability to function effectively. At this stage, the kidneys can no longer adequately filter waste, remove excess fluid, or maintain proper electrolyte balance.
Patients with ESRD require renal replacement therapy, such as dialysis or kidney transplantation, to survive.
What Causes ESRD?
ESRD develops over time as a result of long-standing kidney damage. The most common causes include:
- Diabetes (the leading cause)
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Glomerulonephritis
- Polycystic kidney disease (PKD)
- Autoimmune conditions (such as lupus)
- Recurrent kidney infections or obstruction

Early diagnosis and management of these conditions can help slow progression, but once ESRD develops, advanced treatment is required.
Treatment Options for ESRD
DIALYSIS
Dialysis performs the essential functions of the kidneys by removing waste and excess fluid from the body.
- Hemodialysis: Typically performed in a dialysis center or at home using a machine to filter blood
- Peritoneal Dialysis: Uses the lining of the abdomen to filter waste, performed at home
Our team works closely with patients to determine the best dialysis option based on their lifestyle and medical needs.
KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
A kidney transplant is often the preferred long-term treatment for eligible patients. It involves surgically placing a healthy kidney from a donor into the body.
Benefits may include:
- Improved quality of life
- Greater independence
- Fewer dietary and fluid restrictions
We partner with leading transplant programs and guide patients through evaluation, referral, and ongoing care.
CONSERVATIVE
(Non-Dialysis) MANAGEMENT
For some patients, especially those with complex medical conditions, conservative management may be appropriate.
This approach focuses on:
- Symptom management
- Quality of life
- Supportive care planning
